WHY DO WE NEED TO WRESTLE?

Wrestling for what has been promised refers to the spiritual, emotional, and sometimes agonizing struggle to claim God's promises in the face of doubt, fear, or delay. Based on the biblical story of Jacob (Genesis 32), this concept highlights that receiving divine promises often requires persevering faith, "wrestling" with God in prayer, and surrendering personal control to allow Him to transform character.

  • Purpose of the Fight: The goal is not just to get what you want, but to be transformed in the process, often resulting in a new identity and dependency on God, sometimes leaving a "limp" (a humbling reminder of dependence).
  • Persistence in Prayer: It is a refusal to let go of God's promises until they are fulfilled, as seen in the phrase, "I will not let you go unless you bless me".
  • Faith over Sight: It requires fighting for what is promised even when circumstances suggest otherwise, relying on God's character rather than immediate outcomes.
  • Surrender as Victory: Paradoxically, wrestling involves surrendering to God's will, admitting weakness, and trusting His strength to act.

Are we wrestling with God or the devil? The answer is yes! There are examples of doing both in scripture. The apostle Paul tells us that we do not wrestle with flesh and blood, but we do wrestle (Ephesians 6:12). Our struggle is rarely with people, nor is it just a personality conflict. Sometimes we need to wrestle principalities and powers, rulers of darkness, telling the devil where to get off. Sometimes we need to get sweaty in prayer, stomp all over “the back forty”, raising our voice, telling the enemy he cannot have our children, our marriage, or our unsaved loved ones.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

Are you fighting for your church?

Some people put a lot of effort fighting for their own will to be done in their church, rather than God’s will.

When your church is going through difficulties, do you wrestle or wrangle?

Do you gripe and gossip, or do you grapple?

Do you change churches, or do you pray the church will change!

It is my hope that this little booklet will make a big difference in how you go after your inheritance and what God has already promised you!
