STANDING FAST IN OUR LIBERTY
As we make our way down the road to liberty there are two ditches on either side: in one lies the wreckage of those who follow legalism and in the other ditch lies the ruined lives of those who have been wrecked by lawlessness.
Both legalism and lawlessness are biproducts of the flesh. I have noticed when those who have lived all their lives in legalism break free, they often swing to the other extreme of living in lawlessness, which basically means “doing your own thing”. Lawlessness occurs whenever we throw off the restraints of Scripture, thinking we are throwing off the bondage of legalism, but instead, we become even more bound by sin.
Oh, how that pendulum swings! It is not easy to sort out what teachings or traditions to keep and which ones to throw off. I call this period “getting the mud out of our lungs.” It sometimes takes time for people to adjust to being free from the yoke.
There is a place between legalism and lawlessness called liberty. It is the place where God has called us to live. We can only get there by faith. Salvation by faith, rather than rule keeping, is the goal. Having His righteousness given to you as a gift is better than any you have earned on your own. There is nothing like resting in His acceptance rather than trying to earn His approval. Walking in liberty should be the goal of every mature Christian. I hope this study helps you make this transition easier, quicker, and the journey more straightforward.
