WHAT JESUS SAID ABOUT GREATNESS

How To Fulfill Our God-Given Need To Be Someone

From the beginning, man was built for honor, glory, and dominion. This means we have a capacity and longing for these things right from birth. You could say it is in our DNA. Almost all of man’s time and strength is put into acquiring these three things, again and again. This is confirmed by Psalm 8:5-6, which says:

You have made him but a little lower than God [or heavenly beings], and You have crowned him with glory and honor. You made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet. (Amplified Bible)

The Bible definition of honor often means “to esteem, to value, or show respect”. We are told in Leviticus 9:32, that we are to stand up in the presence of a gray-headed person and honor the face of an old man, as a sign that we fear God. This mandate was not seen in the laws of other counties at that time; giving honor was one of the distinguishing marks of the Kingdom of God.

Other biblical words often translated as “honor” all basically mean to esteem and treat someone with respect because of who they are or what they have done. When honor happens, someone’s reputation is enhanced, or their circle of influence becomes enlarged. We see this fleshed out in the story of Joshua, who took Moses’ place as the leader of God’s people. God said to him: "This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you." (Joshua 3:7)

Much of what we see as a longing to be successful today comes from our need to be great.

What if that compulsion is God-given?

What if it is not wrong, but how it happens and what we do with it that should be our greater concern?

This brochure is a perfect size for your devotions or a small group study.
